Spinach and Kiwi Smoothie Heaven

July 2, 2015 by D. A. Wolf 6 Comments

Anyone for a green smoothie? A little kiwi, a little spinach, a surprise ingredient…

Raw SpinachNow, we’ve been known to add raw spinach to almost anything in this household — very Popeye. But I hadn’t considered adding it into my recent disciplined diet quite in this way.

However, not only are kiwi and spinach consistent with a summer state of mind, but a desire for satisfying textures led me to an old favorite that I had forgotten about. Smoothies! I don’t know why they’ve slipped my mind for several years, since they’re incredibly easy and quick to pull off, and you feel like you’re eating dessert.

So get ready for this recipe that intrigued me as soon as I happened on it. Spinach and Kiwi Smoothie, which inspired me to dash to my local market and make sure I had everything necessary, including the “surprise.”

Doesn’t it look delish?

It turns out that mine isn’t quite as pretty to look at, but it was a blast to make — especially with the raised eyebrows of my son and a friend when I requested their assistance as my Taste Testing Team.

That secret ingredient?

Flax seed!

I will add that I love flax seed (really), and I also love spinach. So I doubled the amount of spinach and likewise, the flax seeds. As I am a bit cavalier in the kitchen when it comes to measuring, I didn’t bother to measure exactly… It was a bit of this so it looked pretty in the blender, then a bit of that (using the same criterion).

Eh voilà!

A fistful of spinach, a banana and a half, and three kiwis that I peeled and sliced.

Yes, that is more than a sprinkling of flax seed on top!

But look how easy this is.

Next, yogurt. And yes, some crushed ice. (I snapped the image before the ice.)

Then all you do is Push. The. Button.

Oh, and pour.

See the seeds? Cool, don’t you think? A crunchy smoothie!

I really should have served it in a Mason jar. (I also made pineapple-orange-banana smoothies the same evening. They went into Mason jars.) But it’s just as scrumptious in a whiskey glass or stemware.

Still, the real trick is getting those Taste Testers to genuinely give it go. A green smoothie isn’t the most usual on the block.

But look! A smile! You should have heard the squeals of pleasure at the first sip… Wait… Now you can. Pop by and visit me on Instagram and check out my lovely taste tester for yourself.

I love that you served it in stemware! I’ve never been a fan of smoothies, because I like the SWEET ones and it’s too great of an indulgence most days. Yours sounds much more healthy and hearty. Enjoy!

My go-to smoothie has yogurt, honey, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. Sometimes I throw in strawberries and a banana! Love spinach but just can’t seem to get my mind wrapped around drinking it! But yours is a lovely shade od green! Hope you are doing well. xo

Well, it certainly LOOKS gorgeous! So, what do flax seeds do, exactly? The only smoothie I make is with almond milk (love, love), kale, banana etc. I tend to just make it in the winter, and mostly when there is nothing else in the fridge for some kind of quick lunch! Summertime I adore tomato sandwiches!!!

OMG! I add spinach to everything, too! And I do add it to my drinks, especially morning smoothies and shakes. A local cafe serves Raspberry Spinach smoothies that I was hooked on from the first sip… I can’t wait to try this recipe because I also love Kiwi!

I’m also in love with the stemware idea! Magnificent…

I made these last summer! But NO KIWI or FLAX seed. That BANANA is key for me! I loved them too……….I shall TRY YOUR VERSION and let YOU know!!
    THANKS!
