Help, please! I need advice. Seriously. I give good phone, and I’d like to get some, too. But I’ve been limping along on a hand-me-down 3-year old cell that’s on its last legs. I need suggestions – truly.
Cell phone requirements
Here are my requirements:
- small (to put in jeans pocket, small purses, or cleavage)
- gives good Google / web access
- quality photos (for art & other subects)
- internationally literate (for overseas trips)
- not too expensive!!
My current (hand-me-down) phone is a Sony Erickson. It is what I had previously (and loved), but this particular device is showing its age in significant ways. Still, it’s picture quality was fabulous, and for texting, the tiny keys were fine for me, though I’d like to be able to email with greater facility.
I’m not sure a Blackberry is for me (all that thumb action without thimbles on hand might not be my thing). That said, I’m open! Maybe it’s exactly what I need. I just don’t know. There are so many choices, I’m not sure where to begin.
I love the idea of iPhone apps, and love the way images turn and page at the touch of a fingertip in some of the phones I’ve seen, but “petite” really is a requirement for me. I’m not a “big purse” woman. Pockets and cleavage. Really!
Communication device dependence
While we’re on this topic, I’m also curious. Do you feel you’re dependent on your technology? On your mobile device?
- Do you leave your Blackberry or iPhone (or other cell) on or turn it off at night?
- Does it depend on circumstances?
- Do you abide by certain cell phone etiquette?
- Rules when at dinner, when kids are around, at social occasions or in public?
Cell phone recommendations?
I am in serious need of advice. I’m not big into gadgets, but I depend on my cell for keeping in touch with my kids, talking to clients, and I’d certainly like to be able to access my blog and other sites via mobile device as well. That’s something I cannot do currently.
Any suggestions?
- What kind of phone do you have?
- What do you like about it?
- What do you recommend for a writer/texter/emailer/photographer?
I’m looking forward to hearing what all of you have to say. My cell is truly on its itty bitty last legs, and those heels above (Louboutin – wouldn’t you know it!) – well, they’re looking mighty nice right about now.

I have a Samsung that gets good internet access but I don’t use that as much. It does text and has a camera. I really like it.

Wish I could help you, but I’ve got nothing. I still own a dinosaur phone that cannot access the internet.
I think, though, that data plans are often super expensive. It might be wise to buy an iPod (or something similar) that offers internet access without having to pay on a monthly basis.
Just a thought.

I’m so ridiculously low tech. I’ve had the same phone for three years. It’s looks like a Jitterbug! 🙂

Clearly my appeal is to a low-tech crowd… 🙂

I would still have my original brick if I could find a battery for it.
How low tech is THAT?

I was like you. I needed little more in a cellphone than the ability to call my husband and my mother. But then I dabbled with my brother’s iPhone and my eyes lit up. So my husband got one for me for my birthday. I almost didn’t open it. I said it was too much money, too much hassle each month for an added cost. I was worried that I’d be one of those people glued to their phones while in a restaurant or waiting for an oil change. I felt guilty. It wasn’t necessary.
But I have to say, I love it. It’s beautiful. I can read the news, play games (though I do that only rarely), check my email, view my address book. And I can read books. BOOKS! It’s pretty freakin’ awesome.
It’s dangerous. It’s naughty. But it’s oh-so-fun.
BigLittleWolf says
Jana – does it fit in small purses and the (ahem) cleavage?
Linda says
I’m a BlackBerry girl, BLW, and I have no cleavage that I’ve discovered so that’s not one of my issues… It fits in a back pocket great, it’s flat, which I love, and I don’t find it too big. I LOVE typing on it. Really, tactile keys are the only way for me. I think I’d have a problem with the IPhone virtual keys and I wouldn’t be happy using a stylus.
That being said, I’m not very technologically advanced. My phone has been unable to save pictures for 6 months and I can’t figure out what’s wrong and haven’t been able to decipher what they told me at the phone store. Although I can access the Internet easily (my home page is Google Search!) and I can look up my blog, I haven’t figured out how to blog on the go. But I have my emails hooked up to it so I’m alert in case a Big Book Deal comes my way (ha ha). At night it gets charged along with all the other phones in the house, far away from us all.
BigLittleWolf says
Ah, thank you Liinda. Yes the Big Book Deal. Always important to have communication devices on hand, just in case. (Thus my device-in-cleavage trick since my teens. It used to be a red phone – you know – better than Maxwell Smart’s shoe phone, but a shoe in my cleavage? A nice Red princess phone. Worked wonders.)

BLW – I was heading out the door yesterday so only told you about my phone. My kids, two of the older boys, have Blackberries – one has the Curve and one the Storm. Both love them but, I don’t pay for their services, the monthly cost is a lot in my mind.
My Samsung T301G is a Tracfone and still gets all the service but no keyboard. I either have to hit keys multiple times or use iTap (or whatever they call it). It fits in my jeans’ pockets. You would probably need a good deal of cleavage to fit it there.

I’ve got an iPhone, had three Blackberry’s before that. Not much of a cleavage person (um, because I don’t have one) but I frequently carry my phone in my jeans pocket. Both the iPhone and the Blackberry have been pretty durable in that respect. The iPhone seems to take pretty good pics although, since I always have a digital camera with me I don’t use my phone for that purpose too often. I never adapted to the touch keyboard on the iPhone so I liked the keyboard on the Blackberry better. The graphics on the iPhone are definitely superior, as is it’s Internet interface. The apps are great too. You can find one for almost everything.
I used to be completely addicted to my phone. I never went anywhere without it and it was certainly always on. When I moved to VA, I moved to one of the last remaining pockets of no AT&T service and, seriously, no cell service at my house. I ended up getting a little flip phone, which I find so difficult to text on that I seldom do that at all anymore. Now it’s basically an emergency phone.
When I move to Tennessee in April I’m going back to the iPhone but I think the addiction is broken! Good luck on your search!

Put another tally mark in your low-tech fan column. I still have the phone that came free with my plan and don’t have a text plan, let alone Internet access.
About a month ago, I was all ready to buy a Blackberry, but I stopped myself: personally, I don’t feel a need to be any more connected than I already am. I thought about that Blackberry and then thought about my little guys and a vision of a perpetually plugged-in Kristen came into my head. Not one I was ready to embrace.

Ewww!!! A cell phone in your cleavage??? LOL! That reminds me of the days when my mom suggested I pin my mad money to by bra. How awkward when you go to pay the cab fare! (I’m funnin’ ya!)
On a more serious note, I am not a big purse gal, love to go clubbing and a purse is a major inconvenience. Over the holiday I purchased a Christmas gift for me and that was a refurbished iPhone (for a third the price of a new one) and I have to tell you I love it!
I am definitely high tech, love the apps, love the fact that I can read your blog (and many of the others who comment here) while I’m waiting in line for whatever, or while I’m waiting for the recess bell to ring and I actually use it for work daily. The internet and music capabilities are amazing, though the camera is less than ideal. I don’t care about that because I have a great point and shoot camera that takes excellent shots and I carry that with me most everywhere I go. I’m sorry I didn’t make the switch sooner. Oh, and my iPhone slips nicely into my jeans or coat pocket leaving my cleavage free for the mad money! ;D
